Our company, in partnership with over 200 village families, specializes in the production of naturally-dyed, handmade Lao silk. We sell many varieties of silk thread and cloth, as well as a growing collection of clothes, scarves, shawls and home decorating items. Handmade silk production is a labour-intensive task that requires a high level of expertise and diligence from the artisan. Each step - from the growing of mulberry saplings, the feeding of worms, the reeling of silk, to the weaving of cloth - requires time and skill. Your purchase helps to keep this traditional Lao art alive by providing women and men with training, resources and a sustainable livelihood. Please read our story of silk page for a in depth look at village silk production.
Lao Sericulture also produces delicious herbal green and red teas, made from the leaves, root and bark of the mulberry tree. Researchers have found that mulberry plants contain many health benefitting nutrients, amino acids and vitamins such as calcium, potassium, and vitamins A, B1, B2, C, and E. Those who drink the tea have found it to be helpful in reducing their levels of blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol, as well as diminishing arthritic pain.
Delicious mulberries are a natural benefit of the silk process. Some of these mulberries are used in our natural dyes, others are sold locally to be used in pies, desserts, jams, and juice. If you live in the Vientiane area and would like to be notified when when fresh mulberries are available, send us an email at info@mulberries.org. Please read our products page for a listing of available products and prices. |
